The Food Podcast

Debuting in August 2019, The Food Podcast, presented by Clearview Federal Credit Union, is a unique platform for Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank to continue to serve as the subject matter experts on all things food. In addition to breaking down barriers that separate people from food, the show creates critical awareness regarding hunger both locally and nationally, with an increased focus on health and wellness initiatives. Hosted by Brian Gulish, Vice President- Marketing & Communications at Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, episodes are released each Wednesday on www.TribLive.com and on Apple Podcasts under TribLive Podcast Network!

Hitting Super Bowl LIV and Taste of the NFL

The Food Podcast went to the Super Bowl. Through a partnership with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Food Bank and board member Bill Fuller — executive chef of the big Burrito restaurant group — were presented tickets to the game.

While in Miami, Fuller and Brian Gulish, Vice President of Marketing and Communications at the Food Bank, attended several events, including Taste of the NFL’s Party With a Purpose. This event benefits food banks across the country.

Episodes

Since the start of the organization’s response to the COVID-19 crisis, Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank has provided more than 7 million pounds of food through various distribution channels.

In addition to the drive-up model, the Food Bank has launched a home delivery service (Doorstep Delivery), added 65 new member agencies through the COVID Community Organization program and has handed out Grab and Go meals through 19 managed sites.

Trinity School District in Washington County is serving more kids through their Grab ‘n Go meals than they typically serve when school is in session according to Nicolle Pleil, the district’s Food Service Director.

Steve Johnston, sixth-generation owner of Apple Castle in New Wilmington, recently joined Brian Gulish on the Food Podcast to discuss his company’s commitment to support Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank’s mission of ending hunger in Southwestern Pennsylvania.

Apple Castle harvests approximately ten-thousand bushels of apples every year according to Johnston. At 100 apples per bushel, Johnston’s crop produces about one-million apples annually.

Empty Bowls, a collaboration between Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank and Just Harvest, will take place on Sunday, March 15 at Rodef Shalom on Fifth Avenue. The event consists of a simple meal of soup and bread to remind people of the one in eight residents of Allegheny County who are facing hunger.

The 25th anniversary of Empty Bowls features soup cooked by some of Pittsburgh’s top restaurants. Local celebrity soup servers, a silent auction of ceramic art and celebrity-autographed bowls, live music, children’s activities.

Trend Teams, LLC, a Pittsburgh based social media start-up, similar to fantasy sports games like football or baseball, has partnered with Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank to help feed people in need.

Trend Teams (www.trendteams.com) is sponsoring The Food Podcast (available on the TribLive Podcast Network) on location in Miami, Florida during Super Bowl LIV weekend.

Each game involves picking a roster of 10 influencers, with a $20,000 budget. The more socially active the public figure, the more expensive the salary.

This week, Feeding America Chief Marketing Officer Cathy Davis joined host Brian Gulish on the Food Podcast to discuss innovative ways that food banks across the country are trying to better communicate their mission.

Locally, 1 in 7 people (300,000) in Southwest Pennsylvania are food insecure according to Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.

Over the course of the past decade, Feeding America has been working to adjust to consumer behavior when it comes to marketing and communicating with the public.

Erin Spangler, nutrition and wellness coordinator at Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, joined host Brian Gulish on this week’s episode of the Food Podcast. In her role, Spangler oversees creating nutrition education resources, including monthly newsletters and recipe cards.

The Food Bank works closely with its network of pantries to provide resources promoting healthy options, with nutritional messaging for better communication.

On episode 13 of the Food Podcast, Brian Gulish is joined by Adam Morgan, Advocacy Coordinator at Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, as he explains what this rule change means, the anticipated impacts and the potential future of the program.

The rule change pertains to SNAP participants who are considered able-bodied, without dependents and between the ages of 18 and 49.

“Markets that thrive in all the important categories associated with population growth, education, and job sustainability are thriving food markets,” said Christina French, founder of TABLE Magazine.

As part of her efforts, French hosted the third-annual TABLE Magazine Western Pennsylvania Lamb Cook-off in September. The event included 10 teams of chefs from Pittsburgh’s most prominent restaurants, preparing various lamb dishes, with proceeds benefiting the Food Bank.

Locally, in Southwestern Pennsylvania, 1 in 7 people are food insecure.

Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank serves 11 counties in the region, not including Westmoreland County, which functions as its own organization.

“We were part of Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank from 1982 until 2000,” said Jennifer Miller, CEO of Westmoreland County Food Bank. “Our area of the region is about the size of Delaware, so it made sense for us to be a standalone food bank.”

Westmoreland County Food Bank serves 7,000 families each month (18,000 people).

Reflecting back on his childhood, Bill Fuller knows what it’s like to be food insecure. Growing up in a single-parent household, Fuller relied on school lunches and food stamps as a means of survival.

Fuller, a corporate chef and president of Big Burrito Restaurant Group, is committed to ending hunger one healthy meal at a time.

As part of the KDKA Turkey Fund partnership, hosts, staff and regular guests from KDKA’s Pittsburgh Today recently visited the Food Bank as part of a volunteer day of service. Two of those guests included John Chamberlin and Rachel Rennebeck from the Pittsburgh-based YaJagoff podcast.

As part of their volunteer day, Chamberlin, Rennebeck, and the entire KDKA team sorted and bagged 4,500 pounds of locally sourced apples (Apple Castle) at the food bank’s repack center. Located in the main warehouse facility in Duquesne, repack volunteers are charged with sorting and repackaging both perishable and non-perishable products.

A Moon Township-based band, Chip & The Charge Ups, is already in the holiday spirit, with the release of its new song, ‘Black and Gold Christmas’. The band is using the song in a unique way to celebrate Pittsburgh pride and raise money for Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.

To go along with the song, Chip & The Charge Ups designed a ‘Black and Gold Christmas’ t-shirt. 100 percent of the proceeds from t-shirt sales will be donated to Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. Shirts can be purchased at the Food Bank or thechargeups.com/store.

The Classroom Cupboard opened in April and is the first district-wide food pantry in western Pennsylvania. The Cupboard is open to all students and families within the district and is located at Montour High School. The pantry offers non-perishable food, personal care items and household supplies.
