There are only a few days left for Congress to finish their work for the year, and we have an important opportunity to pass tax legislation that would bring billions of meals into the national food banking network.
Right now, Congress is working on a tax package that would renew or make permanent several expiring tax provisions. We’re working with other nonprofits around the country to make sure that tax deductions for food donations and other charitable giving are included in that final package – and we need your help. Will you join us in supporting our donors?
Calling Congress is easy. Here’s what to do:
- Dial the toll-free number 1-888-398-8702.
- Listen to the pre-recorded message and enter your zip code when asked. Then follow the instructions to connect to one of your senators first. *Be sure to call back twice to make sure you speak to both of your senators and your representative.
- Once you are connected to your member of Congress’ office, deliver a message like this one:
“My name is [NAME] and I live in [NAME OF HOME TOWN]. As a supporter of Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, I am calling to urge [MEMBER OF CONGRESS’ NAME] to include the America Gives More Act charitable tax incentives in any final tax package. While food banks are constantly seeking more donations to help meet the need in their communities, over 70 billion pounds of food are wasted each year. Passing charitable giving tax incentives will help food banks get more food to people in need.”
Thank you for taking the time to speak out today in support of legislation that will help provide more meals to people in our community.
