As you know, TEFAP foods provided by USDA are an important part of the food our network relies on to help feed hungry Americans. Part of those TEFAP foods are provided through bonus commodities purchased by USDA when prices are low and farmers need support, and the food is distributed through TEFAP.
Unfortunately, TEFAP bonus commodities dropped to $230 million in FY2013 (from $300 million), and unless USDA makes more purchases, would fall even lower to $195 million in FY2014.
Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) and Representatives Marcia Fudge (D-OH) and Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) are leading Dear Colleague letters to USDA, urging Secretary Vilsack to use the funding he has left to make additional bonus purchases. The Casey letter was sent to Senate staff earlier today, and the Fudge/Goodlatte letter should be sent to House staff soon.
Please call your Member of Congress NOW and ask them to sign the Casey and Fudge/Goodlatte TEFAP letters. Click here for a copy of the letters and a list of Members who signed the letters in 2013. We only have until July 31, so please act immediately!
