The hurt of hunger and food insecurity is well documented. It harms the capacity of children to learn; it worsens the health of seniors; and it reduces the productivity of the working poor. A recent study by Harvard School of Public Health estimated the annual cost of allowing hunger to persist in Pennsylvania at $3.2 billion. Food insecurity squanders Pennsylvania’s investments in health care, education, and economic development. Consequently, anti-hunger programs can play an important role in advancing other critical Commonwealth priorities.
