News from the CEO - April 2008

Message from the CEO List

I am excited to share with you some of our latest activities. You are aware of our Campaign to End Hunger – indeed, it has become a kind of guiding beacon that spurs on all of our day-to-day work. In May we are formally launching the Kids Campaign to End Hunger! This complement to our big campaign is about encouraging children (of any age) to step up and join the fight against hunger, in whatever way they can imagine.

With or without family or school support, children often want to be a part of helping their community. Like Jacob Klein, the seven-year-old who came to us last fall with his very own “big check” of funds he collected from sponsors of his hits during his little league games. And Averie, who celebrated her 5th birthday party by asking her friends to bring donations and food for the Food Bank instead of gifts. Be sure to visit our KCTEH website page and learn more!

Meanwhile, Empty Bowls enjoyed another successful year with record number of bowls and gallons of soup, and more than 1300 attendees! The St. Patrick’s Day Food Drive raised nearly $1,000, and Scouting for Food Began on April 1st. This food drive by the Scouts lasts all through April, and very important to the Food Bank. If you have Boy Scouts in your area, please help them collect as much food as possible. If your company is participating, you can help there. And anyone can visit the Virtual Food Drive for Scouting for Food!

It is regrettable that our federal legislators have not been as productive. At this writing there is still no Farm Bill. This is disappointing to us in light of so many higher prices for fuel and food, both for us and for many people who rely on us for food. The Food Bank needs the nutrition title improvements that will come with the new farm bill!

As always, your help speaking out is needed, and much appreciated. We need to try to secure positive enhancements to Governor Rendell’s new 08-09 state budget. You can help right now: join the letter-writing campaign.

There is one more link I would like you to be sure to visit – our “News” page. This Food Bank and food banking in general is threatened by the pressures of rising prices, increased need for assistance and diminishing support. I invite you to read the articles so that you will be informed about the issues and up to date on our response. Please make a donation at this time; it is greatly needed.

I wish you the many joys of the coming warmth and seasonal rebirth!

Peace –

Joyce
